summer-08-cabin-091.jpgOur family was in great need of a fun two night getaway so we decided to stay in a log cabin at the Wilderness at Silver Dollar City.

Located on Hwy. 265, just around the corner from Silver Dollar City, The Wilderness is a campground that has areas devoted to RV hook-ups and tent pads for the avid camper. They also have and a lovely area devoted to 36 log cabins.

When you drive down the lane it's like stepping back in time because all the logs were hewed by Silver Dollar City log hewer, Mark Edwards. However I was glad for the convenience of electricity, running water and to be able to catch the local news and weather on TV!

summer-08-cabin-088.jpgThe first night we settled in to our comfortable cabin and made plans for the following day. We went up to take a dip in the swimming pool which is next to the Wilderness General Store and were delighted to find a game room, laundry facilities and store which carries all the things you might need but forgot to pack for a great camping/log cabin experience. They even had marshmallows and bundles of firewood you could purchase which was great since our son had his heart set on roasting marshmallows. Here's a picture of our little fire next to the cabin. I think we roasted the whole bag and yes, I like them burnt!

summer-08-cabin-055.jpgEach cabin has two rocking chairs on the front porch which we enjoyed while having our quiet time each morning and rocking to the rhythm of the cicadas at night as lightning bugs danced through the air.

The cabins vary in amenities. Our cabin could sleep four (queen bed and daybed with trundle) had a kitchenette, and bathroom. Towels are provided and changed out daily along with your trash, but the sheets are not changed daily (just like home)! There are front porches for rocking and most cabins have back porches which have a gas grills for grilling and hanging wet beach towels to dry.  There are also larger cabins with lofts that can sleep up to eight.

summer-08-cabin-072.jpgSome of the great perks of staying at the campground are if you buy a one day pass to Silver Dollar City you get two days for the price of one. Another great discount for Silver Dollar City Season Pass Holders is 15% off each night you camp or 15% off 2 or more nights you stay in a cabin. There is also a Shuttle to and from Silver Dollar City so you can be dropped off or picked up right at the front gate. Oh, and did I mention the homemade donuts! The Wilderness General Store makes fresh donuts each morning that you can purchase singly or by the dozen! Great with their freshly brewed coffee....yum!

summer-08-cabin-013.jpgWe went to the City to take in some of the great Kids Fest activities, then came back to the cabin for a nap! It wasn't too hot that afternoon so we left the door open and enjoyed the breeze from the screen doors. In the distance we could hear the Silver Dollar City steam train whistle....it was perfect and so relaxing that we just wanted to hang out on the campground, swim and roast marshmallows. We did go out for dinner, but were ready to get back and relax by the fire. The only thing I would have done different? Stay more than two nights! Don't get me wrong. Two nights were wonderful, and if that's all you have time for, do it. But it was so much fun, so conveniently located to all the Silver Dollar City properties that we could make our whole vacation right there!
