What Crafts Do You Enjoy?

Have you ever taken the time to visit with the many craftsmen at the City?  I enjoy seeing the art and skill of craftsmanship, especially during the National Harvest Festival and with over 100 visiting craftsmen on park, there are many tales and stories of how they started doing their particular craft.

Looking over the list of visiting craftsmen and women on the website, there are some familiar names I recognize but more that I don't.  It looks like this year there are a lot of new crafts to see and people to meet!  Old time favorites for me are Coburn and Doris Schrock with Schrock Family Sorghum.  Coburn always has a warm hello and Doris always gives me a hug.  Or, I love picking out a new pair of earrings from Jim & Sherri Chappelear who have Gemstone Jewlry.  And, it's always good to see what new things Jewel Sanders and Susie Everhart are making out of cornshucks.  Plus, Doug Bratcher's Cooperage is a full of handcrafted barrels and buckets...I just might get a bucket this year after all!

Check out the list online yourself and you'll see some craftsmen and crafts that'll pique your interest as well.  I'm looking forward to seeing all the baskets, pottery, natural bath and beauty products, pumpkin folk art and hammocks...just to name a few!  Do you have a favorite craft or craftsperson at the City?  Let me know what you find.  I'd be happy to hear your stories!

I enjoy Frank "Doughboy" Capps at Sullivan's Mill. He tells a lot of great stories & has put some of them into book form. I had the pleasure of being a Craftsman for a Day with Frank a couple of years ago. What an experience!!! I was able to dress in SDC clothing & bake the awesome Cinnamon bread as well as the breads.

During the Fall Festival, Jewel Sanders and Susie Everhart at the Cornshuckery are my favorite crafts people. I have scarecrows that I purchased from them years ago that I put out every year when I decorate the house for fall, and they are still looking as good as the day I purchased them!

Year round, I love visiting Hillcreek Pottery. It is by far my favorite shop in the City. I have many pieces of pottery throughout my home that were made by Sarah Gamble. Every time we visit the City, I buy at least one piece of pottery made by Sarah. My children and I love watching her work her magic with the clay, forming many different pieces of pottery. My daughter loves talking with her. If you have had the pleasure of watching her, you know that she is a very talented woman.

Some friends of mine purchased a small quilt form one of the crafters as a baby shower gift for my daughter. Since then that blanket has become my daughter's favorite "lovey." She calls it her "kie" (as in blankie) and carries it with her everywhere! Needless to say, whenever "kie" needs a bath it can be a challenge. So, we will probably try to find a back up at the park this year!

I like to start my Christmas shopping early during the National Harvest Festival. It helps justify all the treasures I want to buy... for me or someone I love! I always try to get a new piece of jewelry from Jim & Sherri Chappelear, and I really enjoy the variety of pottery that different artisans make.
