What was taken out was the Merry-go-Round, the Balloon Ride and the rope and slide area. All the rides in the Grand Exposition are still there and running.

As for the weather, I would check one of the local news stations for their forecast. I live in Springfield, I usually watch KY3 or KOLR10. I would go with layers, that way you can take off some if anyone gets too warm. A couple of those warm hands things for pockets is never a bad idea either in winter.

If you go to the main Silver Dollar City site, there is a link at the top of the page that says "Shows and Schedules". That will bring up the current show schedule for the park. While it may not be current to when you will be visiting, it will help you know what shows you may want to see. It also lists the temperatures that will cause rides to close. This info is at the bottom of the page. I don't think there is any list of suggested essential items, but I can tell you a few things. You will want to dress warmly, in layers. Have mittens, gloves, and scarfs available. Warm hand packs are great for pockets on chilly days. If you don't have one, a mug is great for refilling often with hot chocolate. Don't forget your camera, because all the lights are amazing. Depending on when you come, there are many areas that are perfect for Christmas card pictures!

Just be ready for anything. Being from Oklahoma, you can appreciate all the changes in weather the midwest can bring! But, I can honestly say that there is nothing like Silver Dollar City for Christmas! Read the show schedule and try to plan shows inside if it is a little chilly. Duck into shops to warm up and just enjoy the season! Have a great time! - bdatchley

we live in oklahoma and haven't been to sdc since this summer. From reading the above comments it sounds like some of the childrens rides are closed or maybe have been taken down? What rides are no longer there for the kids? Thanks
Also I am new to this site...does anyone know where I might find some info on essential items to bring with me for the kids during the x-mas festival (i.e. how should I expect the weather to be, and suggestions on how to dress the kids 10month old and 2yr.old). I don't want them to be dressed to warmly. This will be my first time to go during the christmas festival!!!!!! - lovemykids

This is because the economy is so bad right now. Dollywood, the sister park, had to put their mountain climbing project on hold too. It's sad that they had to do this, but can't wait til they get it all done. I don't think they will do any work with the other rides until the economy get better. Let's just hope somehow they get to put all the old rides back up soon!! - Caydonsmom

We were at the city this past weekend and they had placed a new sticker on the sign for the new ride. I guess it is going to open in 2010 instead of next year. I am curious to see if they put the merry-go-round somewhere else in the park. - bdatchley

I agree with the above post about the water rides only being good for part of the year if you get wet on them. We were also missing the balloon rides. - basebaugh

I saw on another post that they are trying to build rides for the teens. The teens in my opinion have a lot of rides. What about the toddlers & young kids? The Grand Exposition has some rides for the smaller kids but Toms Landing was a nice added area for the smaller kids. I have both teens & preschoolers, & my teens spend most of their time on the coasters & water rides & the little ones ride the few rides that they can and play in the fort. Also, the water rides are not as useful during the fall/winter months.
A ferris wheel would be great! Especially if you are able to see above the trees & enjoy the view. Rides that everyone can enjoy no matter their age or restriction. - kelleysinok

I can't stop saying how glad I am that they are keeping the old Tom Sawyer theme alive. However, I'm still very much hoping that there is more to this expansion than just the splash battle. Splash battles are fine rides, but I don't think such a ride alone could replace the glorious memories that were made on a a daily basis in Tom Sawyer's old River Fort. Here's hoping they bring back some of the old with the new, especially in regards to the tree house that will apparently come down at last this year. - Shavethewhales

Its going to be a ride like they have at Dollywood. Its going to be themed after Tom Saywer and Huck Finn and will be a River Battle style attraction like Dollywoods River Battle. It looks like a great ride but it is sad they got rid of all that they did. - Caydonsmom
